What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are a permanent solution to missing teeth. The implants provide support for custom dental restorations such as a single crown, a dental bridge, a denture, or a full arch prosthesis. Dental implants function as artificial tooth roots and are made up of three parts: a titanium or ceramic post, an abutment, and a ceramic or porcelain restoration.
Dental implants are designed to look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth. With dental implants, we can replace one or multiple missing teeth as a solution that can last you a lifetime.

Types of Dental Implants
Dental implants are the gold-standard solution for tooth replacement, whether you’re missing one or several teeth. Our cosmetic implant dentistry practice offers the following types of implant procedures:
- Single Tooth Implants – Frequently used to replace a single tooth that was lost to traumatic injury or decay.
- Implant-Supported Bridge – Ideal for restoring two or more adjacent teeth lost to decay or injury, this type of restoration anchors a bridge between two implant-supported crowns.
- Full Mouth Dental Implants – Also called All-on-4 or “same day” implants, this method uses four to six dental implants to replace a full arch of missing teeth. Temporary restorations are attached to the implants during one office visit. After the implants have fused with the bone, permanent crowns are placed.
- Implant-Supported Dentures – An implant-supported denture attaches directly to the jawbone, eliminating the need for messy adhesives. The oral appliance clips securely to the implant for more stability and strength.
- Zygomatic Dental Implants – These implants are reserved for patients with severe jawbone loss. They are anchored in the cheekbone and help restore long-term functionality, aesthetics, and confidence.

Steps Involved in The Implant Process
Dental implant surgery is often performed in stages, allowing a period of weeks between each visit for healing. The steps involved in the implant process will depend on the type of restoration used. If there is insufficient bone mass to support an implant, a bone grafting procedure may also be indicated.
· Damaged or decayed tooth is removed
· Bone augmentation with grafting, if necessary
· Dental implant post placement
· Healing period of 3-6 months to allow implant to fuse with the bone
· Abutment and artificial tooth placement
For standard dental implants, the entire process can take anywhere from 5 to 8 months from initial post placement to full smile restoration.
Who is a Candidate for dental implants?
Our Long Island implant dentists screen patients thoroughly to determine whether they are good candidates for dental implant surgery. The good news is that most people can benefit from this life-changing procedure.
Excellent candidates for dental implants are patients with healthy gum tissues and good jaw bone support. Those with extensive bone loss may need a bone grafting procedure first.

Preparing for Dental Implant Surgery
The following steps can help the dental implant procedure go smoothly.
- Fill any prescriptions provided by your implant dentist
- If you smoke or use tobacco products, stop them at least 6 weeks prior to surgery as they can slow the healing process
- Stop taking ibuprofen, vitamin E, Omega 3 supplements, and anti-inflammatory drugs at least 10 days before the procedure
- Avoid alcoholic beverages 2 days before surgery
- Have a friend or family member available to drive you home after surgery
- On the day of surgery, wear loose, comfortable clothing
- Follow instructions regarding fasting the night before

Aftercare and Recovery
Patients should schedule a few days of downtime after the surgery. Soreness and swelling are to be expected but resolve quickly. It’s a good idea to arrange childcare or help with household chores for a few days and stock up on healthy soft foods like yogurt, cottage cheese, pasta, mashed potatoes and soup. Avoid strenuous exercise for at least 3 days, and take pain medications/antibiotics as directed.
The sutures used for dental implant surgery are dissolvable and will typically fall out after 7-10 days. Patients can rinse with warm salt water and brush their teeth gently, avoiding surgical sites.
Common questions about dental implants
If you have questions about implants or a scheduled procedure, our Long Island implant and cosmetic dentists and support staff are always available.
How long do dental implants last?
Dental implants are designed to be permanent. With good oral hygiene, implants can last upwards of 20 years.
How painful is the procedure?
Patient comfort and safety are our top priorities, whether we’re placing a single implant or a full arch of replacement teeth. Our practice has licensed anesthesia providers on staff, who will administer local, general, or IV sedation depending on the procedure and patient needs.
How do I take care of my dental implants?
You should care for dental implants like you do for your natural teeth. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups are important to ensure their longevity. Remember, implants will never get cavities but are still vulnerable to regular wear and tear.
Costs and Insurance
We encourage all prospective patients to discuss the costs of dental implant procedures with our dedicated staff. Your insurance company may provide limited coverage for dental implants, but if you are worried about finances, we will do our best to accommodate your needs.
