Here’s a fun fact: your smile (or lack of smiling) is one way people form an impression of you, albeit unconsciously, when meeting you for the first time. A smile shows you are friendly and likely easy to get along with. This is where veneers come in if you have a less-than-perfect set of teeth. One question we’re asked often is how long porcelain veneers last, especially on the front teeth. Do they need to be replaced often? Do they last indefinitely?
What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Veneers are medical-grade ceramics attached to the front surface of the teeth. They enhance a person’s smile, especially if the person has stained teeth from smoking or drinking beverages like coffee. Veneers can also be used to improve appearance of existing teeth that are crooked or out of alignment. Veneers are nearly indistinguishable from real dental enamel.
Veneers may be right for you if you have teeth cracks/chips, misalignment, discoloration, or wide gaps.
How Long Do Front Veneers Last?
Modern veneers are quite sturdy and can generally last anywhere between 10 and 30 years. Ultimately, their longevity depends on how well you take care of your dental health. If you adhere to basic oral hygiene, such as brushing twice daily, flossing, rinsing, and visiting the dentist regularly, they will last longer.
Like regular teeth, veneers may occasionally require cosmetic repair or even a full replacement. For some people, the veneers last a lifetime.
There are a few factors that can also reduce the veneers’ lifespan. This includes regularly chewing on ice, and biting on your fingernails. In other words, refrain from biting on overly hard objects. This puts excessive pressure on the veneers and may cause them to crack. Remember, veneers are made of porcelain and are not indestructible.
How to Care for Porcelain Veneers
Veneers are an investment, so care for them to prolong their lifespan. As we mentioned, follow basic oral hygiene at home like brushing, flossing, and rinsing. To preserve the veneers’ whiteness, we also suggest switching to a whitening toothpaste that’s also non-abrasive.
You should also limit teeth-staining foods and beverages. This includes coffee, soda, and anything with artificial dye. These are the culprits that caused discoloration to your natural teeth in the first place. If you consume these, be sure to brush right away or at least rinse your mouth with water.
